Bell-lloc d'Urgell is a small municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's coin shortage — triggered by the hoarding and melting of metallic coinage — left local commerce effectively paralysed. The Ajuntament issues of 1936–37 were purely local instruments, accepted only within the issuing town and theoretically redeemable at the municipal offices.
At the dimensions recorded, this is among the smallest emergency issues in the Catalan series — closer to a ticket than a banknote in physical terms.
