Sindicat Agrícola de Beguda Alta was one of hundreds of Catalan agricultural cooperatives that issued emergency small-denomination paper during the catastrophic coin shortage of 1936–37. When the Republican government failed to supply adequate fractional currency after the outbreak of the Civil War, municipalities, cooperatives, and even individual businesses filled the void themselves — legally sanctioned under a July 1937 decree but often already circulating well before official permission arrived.
The thick card stock was a practical choice: lightweight paper tore quickly in daily market use, and these notes changed hands constantly for bread, wine, and basic goods within the cooperative's immediate catchment area.
