Barbastro, a market town in Aragon, issued its own fractional emergency currency in 1937 because the Republic's small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply consumed by the chaos of wartime logistics. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities did the same, producing what collectors now catalog under the broader billetes locales category.
Rieusset was a serious commercial printer, not a wartime improvisation — their Barcelona plant handled significant packaging and periodical work. The quality of their output on these municipal notes generally exceeds what the political circumstances might suggest.
