Ballesteros de Calatrava is a small municipality in Ciudad Real province, and this 50 céntimos piece is exactly what it appears to be: a wartime local emergency issue, produced when the Republican government's decree of 1936 authorized municipalities to print fractional currency to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation. Copper and silver had been hoarded or melted almost immediately after the July coup.
The Gari Mon reference remains unassigned, which is not unusual for the smaller Castilian municipal issuers — many survive in tiny quantities, and cataloging has lagged behind the material.
