50 Céntimos Azanuy

Azanuy is a village in the Huesca province of Aragon with a population that barely reached a few hundred even in the 1930s. Like scores of other tiny Republican municipalities during the Civil War, the local council printed its own fractional emergency currency after metallic coin vanished almost entirely from circulation in 1936–37. The Consejo Municipal issues from this part of Aragon are among the most localized money ever produced in modern Spain — the issuing authority's geographic reach sometimes extended no further than a single street.
