One of hundreds of municipal emergency issues printed across Catalonia during the Civil War, this note was authorized under the decree that allowed local governments to issue small-denomination scrip to address the chronic shortage of coins — silver and copper had been hoarded or melted almost immediately after July 1936. Imprenta Payà in Lleida produced notes for several nearby municipalities during this period, working under significant constraints of both material and time.
Artesa de Lleida fell behind Republican lines until the Nationalist advance of early 1938. Notes from this municipality circulated for a narrow window.
