The Consell Municipal de l'Argentera issued this note during the Civil War period when the collapse of small-denomination coinage left Catalan municipalities scrambling to produce their own emergency fractional currency. These locally printed pieces — known collectively as "moneda de butxaca" or pocket money — were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's 1937 framework permitting municipal councils to fill the gap left by hoarded Republican coins.
L'Argentera is a tiny village in the Baix Camp comarca. The sheer smallness of the issuing authority makes Turró-catalogued survivors genuinely rare; production runs for settlements this size were often in the low hundreds.
