Argensola is a tiny municipality in the comarca of Anoia, inland Catalonia, and in 1937 it had no business issuing currency — except that it had no choice. The Republican government's chronic shortage of small change during the Civil War pushed hundreds of Catalan municipalities, including villages of only a few hundred inhabitants, to print their own fractional notes under a framework loosely authorized by the Generalitat. These local emissions are collectively catalogued in Turró's reference work, which remains the primary tool for identifying them.
At this size and on card stock, the note functioned more as a token than paper money — physically closer to a tramway ticket than a banknote.
