Amposta is a small town on the Ebro Delta in Tarragona, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its local council began issuing fractional paper currency in 1937 after the Republic's centimos coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These municipal emissions were never coordinated by any central authority; each council designed and printed what it could, when it could.
Turró catalogues this emission, but surviving examples are poorly documented in terms of print runs. Small-town Catalan issues from this period were often printed in single-digit thousands and redeemed — or simply discarded — within months.
