During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-change circulation forced hundreds of Republican municipalities to issue their own emergency fractional currency — a phenomenon so widespread that the Spanish government eventually tried, with limited success, to regulate it. Albacete's municipal council was an issuer of particular note: the city served as the operational base for the International Brigades from late 1936 onward, meaning these céntimos circulated in an unusually internationalized local economy, passing through the hands of volunteers from across Europe and the Americas buying basics in local shops.
