Aigüestoses del Llobregat — a small municipality in the Berguedà comarca — issued cardboard emergency currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced acute shortages of metallic coin. The Francoist blockade and wartime hoarding stripped small-denomination coinage from circulation almost entirely by 1936–37, forcing hundreds of Catalan municipalities to print or stamp their own locally valid substitutes.

At 48mm, this is an unusually large format for a 50-céntimos piece, likely a practical response to the fragility of warboard stock — larger discs survived handling better.
