Aiguafreda is a small municipality in the Vallès Oriental comarca, northeast of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during 1937 as the Republic's coinage supply collapsed under wartime conditions. These local issues — collectively known as moneda de paper municipal — were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's emergency framework and varied wildly in print quality depending on what press each municipality could access.
Grafos, by 1937 operating as a collectivized workshop under CNT-FAI control, handled a significant share of Barcelona's commercial printing during the war years. Their involvement here is typical of how anarcho-syndicalist collectives absorbed civilian production contracts across Catalonia.
