Agullana is a small municipality in Alt Empordà, Girona, pressed hard against the French border — and that geography is precisely why its wartime emergency issues matter. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government permitted local councils to print their own small-denomination paper money to address the acute shortage of coin in circulation. The Ajuntament d'Agullana took that authority seriously enough to produce a properly numbered series, of which this 50 céntimos is a part.
Turró catalogs these Catalan municipal issues exhaustively, and Agullana's notes are among the more obscure border-town emissions — low original mintage, minimal surviving population.
