The 2018 50 céntimos was issued as part of Venezuela's attempted monetary stabilization just months before the government introduced the "Soberano" redenomination in August 2018, which lopped five zeros off the bolívar fuerte. Coins of this type were functionally obsolete almost immediately after striking — the 50 céntimos represented so little purchasing power by mid-2018 that vending machines and transit systems had already stopped accepting small-denomination coins years prior.
