Obverse description Central field bears the Costa Rican national coat of arms: an ornate cartouche-shaped shield depicting three volcanoes rising from a coastal plain flanked by the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, with a sailing vessel on each body of water, seven stars arching above the peaks representing the seven provinces, and a rising sun in the upper canton. The shield is supported by laurel branches on either side and surmounted by a decorative scroll. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin letters, with the date flanked by two six-pointed stars at the lower field, and mint-master initials C and R appearing as small stars at the lower left and right respectively. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded rim.
