| 裏面の説明 | A full-length frontal effigy of the monk-soldier of the Grimaldi family stands at centre, robed in a monk's habit and holding a long sword vertically before him with both hands. To his left, the Monegasque lozenge shield is displayed beneath a princely crown. The denomination 50 CENTIMES is inscribed in large numerals and letters to the right of the figure, with the word ESSAI below. The bipartite motto DEO JUVANTE (With God's Help) is divided across the field, DEO appearing to the upper left and JUVANTE to the lower left of the shield. |

Monaco's 1962 coinage reform followed the revaluation of the French franc, which forced dependent territories to realign their entire currency series simultaneously. Essai pieces from this reform were struck in limited numbers for official distribution and archival purposes — they were never released into circulation. The copper-aluminium composition was chosen to match the new French 50 centimes, keeping the two monetary systems interchangeable at the counter.
