Monaco's 1962 coinage reform followed the introduction of the new French franc in 1960, which forced the Principality to realign its own currency system. Essai pieces from this reform series were struck in limited numbers for official presentation and archival purposes — not for circulation — which is why survival rates in pristine condition are high relative to the issued coinage.
The .950 silver specification for this essai differs from the aluminium-bronze used in the circulating 50 centimes, making the trial a materially distinct object rather than a simple proof of the working dies.
