| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing effigy of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and military collar. The engraver's signature SIMON appears in small letters beneath the truncation of the bust, and the date 1962 is inscribed in the lower field. Monaco's 1962 coinage reform followed the introduction of the new French franc in 1960, which forced the Principality to realign its own currency system. Essai pieces from this reform series were struck in limited numbers for official presentation and archival purposes — not for circulation — which is why survival rates in pristine condition are high relative to the issued coinage.
The .950 silver specification for this essai differs from the aluminium-bronze used in the circulating 50 centimes, making the trial a materially distinct object rather than a simple proof of the working dies.
