Louis II ruled Monaco for over three decades but issued remarkably little coinage. The 1926 copper-aluminium pieces were among his earliest, produced in Paris at a moment when the principality was reorganizing its monetary arrangements following the post-WWI disruption to the Franco-Monégasque monetary relationship. The aluminium-bronze alloy was a deliberate peacetime economy choice, widely adopted by European mints in the early 1920s as silver was reserved for higher denominations.
Mintage figures for this type were modest, and surviving circulated examples are frequently found with heavy surface corrosion — the alloy proved poorly suited to Monaco's coastal humidity.
