The 1948 French coinage reform followed Liberation-era monetary chaos and the need to establish a stable Republican identity divorced from both Vichy and the provisional government's stopgap issues. Essais — official trial strikes produced by the Monnaie de Paris for submission and approval — were struck in limited numbers for internal review and are catalogued separately from circulation issues precisely because most never progressed further.
This incuse design was ultimately rejected. The bronze-nickel alloy itself was experimental for the denomination at this date.
