The 1949 French essai pieces were struck as trial submissions during the postwar overhaul of the nation's coinage infrastructure, when the Monnaie de Paris was systematically testing new alloys and designs before committing to full production runs. This 50 centimes essai was never adopted for circulation — the denomination itself was essentially rendered obsolete by inflation before it could be established.
Essais of this type were distributed in small quantities to officials and select collectors, not the public.
