The Chambre de Commerce de la Marne was one of dozens of regional French chambers authorized to issue emergency small-denomination notes during and after the First World War, filling the void left by hoarded coins. The Marne department carries particular weight in this story — Reims itself was under near-constant bombardment for much of the war, and Debar & Cie printed this series from a city still in active reconstruction when the 1922 date was struck.
JP#43.1 is among the more localized of the postwar fractional issues, circulating in a tight regional economy rather than any national clearing system.
