The Banco Nacional de la República Oriental del Uruguay was a short-lived institution, established in 1887 and absorbed into the newly formed Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay in 1896. This note falls within that narrow nine-year window. Waterlow & Sons handled the printing — a London firm that dominated South American government and bank security printing throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, winning contracts across the continent partly on price, partly on the quality of their intaglio work.
The P#A89 prefix designation suggests this denomination may have seen limited issue or survives in small numbers relative to higher-value notes of the same series.
