Obverse description Right-facing bust of José Gervasio Artigas, national hero and founding father of Uruguay, occupying the central field. A semicircular legend arches above the effigy, giving the full name of the republic, while the date 1960 and the name ARTIGAS appear within the inscription. The portrait is rendered in a restrained, classical style typical of Royal Mint production of the mid-twentieth century.
