Issued for the Holy Year of 1933, which Pius XI declared an extraordinary jubilee marking the 1,900th anniversary of the Crucifixion — a year early by the standard 25-year cycle, and the first jubilee since 1925. The Vatican's jubilee coinage that year was struck in nickel rather than silver, a consequence of the economic austerity following the Great Depression that had forced adjustments across European minting programs.
