Opmerkingen	Trieste's postwar municipal fractional notes occupy a genuinely strange moment: the city was under Allied Military Government from May 1945, contested between Yugoslavia and Italy, and would not be formally resolved until the 1954 London Memorandum. The Comune issued these small-denomination pieces to address a severe coin shortage, functioning as emergency fiduciary instruments while the city's political status remained entirely unresolved — it was, technically, neither Italian nor Yugoslav territory when most of these circulated. Heavy use and the low-grade wartime paper stock mean worn examples are the rule, not the exception.
