Additional information

Trial strikes in lead were a standard step in Bolivian mint approval processes at the turn of the century, used to test die alignment and relief before committing to silver production runs. Whether this piece passed through the Potosí mint or was produced for review by the Banco de Bolivia's issuing authority is rarely documented for this denomination.

Lead's malleability makes it unforgiving of any die deterioration — surface flow lines and edge compression on survivors often tell more about die condition at the moment of striking than the production coins themselves do.
