Tránsito Amaguaña, born Rosa Elena Tránsito Amaguaña Alba in 1909, spent decades organizing Indigenous Quechua communities in Pichincha province against the huasipungo system — a form of debt peonage that bound laborers to hacienda land. She co-founded the Ecuadorian Federation of Indians in 1944 alongside Dolores Cacuango. Ecuador has honored her on currency before, but the 2023 reissue reflects a broader government push to reassert Indigenous figures within official numismatic output.
