The issue title 'EL ESTADO DE SONORA' arches across the top in bold letters, with serial number and series letter printed in red on either side. Below the central vignette, the issuing decree reference and place-date 'Hermosillo, Sonora, México, Enero 1o de 1915' are inscribed, with four facsimile signature lines and titles at the foot of the note. |

Sonora's 1915 emergency currency was a direct consequence of the revolutionary government's near-total exclusion from the federal monetary system. With Carrancista forces controlling the state and Mexico City's banking infrastructure either collapsed or hostile, Sonora issued its own fractional notes rather than accept the competing scrip flooding in from other revolutionary factions. The American Bank Note Company contract reflects just how much credibility the state government was deliberately signaling — ABNCo work was internationally recognized, and the choice was a calculated political statement about legitimacy.
The S1070 series is prone to foxing along the edges due to storage conditions common in the Sonoran climate, worth noting when assessing survivors.
