Argentina's hyperinflationary spiral of the mid-1980s forced several provincial governments to issue their own emergency currency — quasi-money that technically functioned as bonds but circulated as cash when federal pesos became unreliable in practice. Tucumán's 1985–1986 issues were among these provincial emergency notes, authorized under pressure from a federal government that had already lost control of monetary stability well before the Austral replaced the Peso Argentino in June 1985.
The 50 Centavos denomination is particularly low within the series — almost ironic given the inflation rates that prompted the issue in the first place.
