Obverse description The obverse features the Portuguese national coat of arms at centre, depicting a cross formed by five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern, each charged with five bezants (roundels) representing the five Moorish kings defeated at the Battle of Ourique. The shield is rendered in a simplified, stylised manner suited to small-denomination coinage. The circular legend REPVBLICA PORTVGVESA arcs around the upper field, while the date appears in the lower field flanked by two decorative star stops.
