| Aversbeschreibung | The Brazilian national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a five-pointed star set within a circle bearing the Southern Cross constellation, the whole encircled by a ring of twenty-seven smaller stars representing the states and federal district. The armorial shield is flanked by branches of coffee and tobacco, two of Brazil's principal agricultural symbols. The circular legend reads REPUBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL around the periphery in Latin lettering. |

| Reversbeschreibung | The large numeral '50' dominates the upper portion of the field in bold, incuse-outlined relief, with the mint mark visible at the lower left of the numeral. The word CENTAVOS is inscribed in a straight legend across the centre of the field, separated from the date below by a horizontal double rule. The four-digit date appears in the lower exergue beneath the rule, the whole design rendered in a clean, modernist typographic style. |

Brazil's shift to aluminium for this denomination in 1957 was a direct response to chronic metal shortages and the inflationary pressures grinding through the Kubitschek administration — the same economic turbulence funding the construction of Brasília. Aluminium coinage was cheap to produce and light enough to mint in volume, but it proved unpopular in circulation: the coins bent easily, wore quickly, and were frequently rejected by vending mechanisms.
The series ran only through 1961, replaced as inflation made the 50 centavos denomination functionally worthless.
