Reverse description The reverse bears a bold right-facing bust of José de San Martín, the celebrated Argentine liberator, rendered in high relief and occupying the majority of the field. The portrait depicts San Martín in civilian attire with a high collar and cravat, showing characteristic facial features including a moustache. The legend 'JOSE DE SAN MARTIN' is divided between the left and right fields, curving around the portrait. The effigy was engraved by Mario Baiardi and exhibits a strong, sculptural quality typical of mid-20th-century Argentine coinage.

Additional information

This series spans the final years of Juan Perón's first presidency and its violent aftermath — the 1955 coup that ousted him, the subsequent "Liberating Revolution," and the military government's immediate effort to erase Peronist iconography from public life. Coins from the later dates in this range were struck under a regime that had literally banned the public display of Perón's image and name. The multiple CJ reference numbers reflect die and surface finish variants documented across the run.
