The Commonwealth of the Philippines silver coinage of 1944–45 was struck in the United States at the Denver and San Francisco mints while the islands themselves were under Japanese occupation. Production continued abroad specifically to have a functioning currency ready for the liberation campaign then underway under MacArthur. Denver issues carry a "D" mint mark; San Francisco pieces bear an "S."
The alloy shift from the earlier .900 fine silver of pre-war issues to .750 was a wartime economy measure adopted across several U.S.-administered coinages during this period.
