The Free Samar Currency Board was one of several guerrilla currency authorities that operated in the Philippine provinces under Japanese occupation during the Second World War. These emergency issues were authorized by the Philippine Commonwealth government-in-exile and served occupied civilian populations in areas where USAFFE-aligned resistance maintained some administrative presence. Samar's relative isolation made it one of the more active guerrilla currency zones in the Visayas.
Paper quality and printing were severely constrained — local materials, often commercially sourced stock, were used wherever available. Surviving examples frequently show damage consistent with humid tropical storage rather than heavy circulation.
