Cagayan's wartime emergency issues were produced under Japanese occupation conditions, when provincial and local governments across the Philippines scrambled to print their own scrip after the invaders withdrew or sequestered existing Philippine Commonwealth currency. The Province of Cagayan series — of which this 50 Centavos is part — circulated in the Cagayan Valley in northern Luzon, one of the last regions where organized Filipino and American resistance held out into late 1942.
The small physical format was a direct consequence of paper shortages, not a design choice.
