Aversbeschreibung The Portuguese colonial coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing the traditional five bezants of Portugal in the first quarter alongside an armillary sphere, the lower portion of the shield charged with wavy lines representing the sea. The arms are rendered in a bold, slightly stylised manner characteristic of Portuguese colonial coinage of the 1930s. The circular legend reads COLONIA DE MOÇAMBIQUE around the upper periphery, with the date 1936 flanked by two raised dots along the lower rim.

Reversbeschreibung The denomination numeral 50 is prominently displayed in large, bold characters at the centre of the field, with the word CENTAVOS inscribed in smaller capitals immediately below. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA runs around the periphery, reading from the lower left upward and around the upper portion of the coin, separated from the central device by a plain inner border. The overall design is austere and typographic, with no additional decorative elements in the field.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Portugal's Estado Novo government under Salazar began issuing coinage for Mozambique in the mid-1930s as part of a broader colonial monetary reorganization intended to tie the overseas territories more firmly to Lisbon's financial administration. The 1936 issue for Mozambique coincided with a period when the colony's economy was heavily structured around forced labor contracts — the chibalo system — with wages often paid in scrip redeemable only at company stores, meaning coins like this one circulated primarily among Portuguese settlers and traders rather than the African labor force that produced the colony's wealth.
