Additional information

Chile's silver fractional coinage came under considerable strain in the early twentieth century as the country wrestled with recurring monetary instability rooted in its bimetallic experiments of the 1890s. By 1914, the Banco Central did not yet exist — it wouldn't be established until 1925 — leaving currency policy fragmented among private banks and the treasury.

The Casa de Moneda in Santiago had been operating continuously since 1743, one of the longest-running mint operations in the Americas. Silver 50 centavos pieces from this period saw limited circulation in practice, as paper currency had already displaced small silver denominations in everyday commerce well before this date.
