Copiapó's municipal coinage of 1865 was a direct consequence of the silver bonanza at Chañarcillo, discovered in 1832, which transformed the city into one of the wealthiest in South America and generated a local demand for specie that the Santiago mint struggled to meet. These pieces were struck under emergency municipal authority, an arrangement almost without parallel in Chilean monetary history.
The .970 fineness is notably high — above the standard Chilean national coinage of the period.
