Obverse lettering REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA 1865

Reverse description A prominent tree, symbolic of the Central American union, occupies the center of the field and divides the denomination. The legend AMERICA CENTRAL arcs along the upper periphery. Below the tree, the fineness designation 9 D. and the assayer's initials G W, attributed to engraver and assayer Guillermo Witting, appear in the lower field. The denomination 50 Cs is distributed to either side of the central tree motif, rendered in a clean roman serif lettering style consistent with regional silver coinage of the period.
