Banco Mauá y Ca. was a Brazilian-owned banking network that operated across the Río de la Plata region in the 1860s, founded by the industrialist Irineu Evangelista de Sousa — the Baron of Mauá. The Rosario branch issued its own notes distinct from those of the Montevideo and Buenos Aires offices, reflecting the fragmented and locally licensed nature of Argentine provincial banking before any central monetary authority existed.
Cotton substrate on notes of this period from the region frequently shows foxing and tide-line staining from the humid Paraná river climate. The "D2" suffix in the Pick designation indicates a signature variety within the type.
