50 Cedis World Fisheries Conference, Silver Piedfort

The 1984 World Fisheries Conference, held in Rome under FAO auspices, prompted a wave of commemorative issues from participating nations — Ghana's piedfort among the more unusual responses. Piedforts, struck at double the normal planchet thickness, were produced almost exclusively for collectors and almost never entered circulation. Ghana's economy in 1984 was in serious disorder: the PNDC under Rawlings had launched its Economic Recovery Program that same year with IMF backing, and hard currency was scarce enough that a silver piedfort was effectively a foreign exchange instrument dressed as a coin.
