Ghana's shift to nickel-plated steel for this denomination was driven by the cedi's prolonged devaluation through the 1980s and 1990s — by the mid-1990s, the 50 Cedis piece represented so little purchasing power that cheaper planchets were the only economical option. The magnetic property distinguishes it cleanly from the earlier non-magnetic version, KM#31.
