| Obverse description | Cast brass cash coin with a central square perforation. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 咸 (Xian), 豐 (Feng), 重 (Zhong), 寶 (Bao). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat field, enclosed within a plain raised rim. The inscription reads 咸豐重寶, denoting 'Heavy Currency of the Xianfeng [Emperor]'. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays a central square perforation flanked by two vertical Manchu script words reading 'Boo-yuwan' (ᠪᠣᠣ ᠶᡠᠸᠠᠨ), the Manchu rendering of the Board of Works mint name, one word to each side of the hole. Above the hole appears the single Chinese character 當 (Dang, meaning 'valued at'), and below the hole are the two Chinese characters 五十 (Wu Shi, meaning 'fifty'), together indicating a denomination of 50 cash. All elements are cast in raised relief within a plain raised rim. |
