Obverse description Cast brass cash coin with a central square perforation. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 咸 (Xian), 豐 (Feng), 重 (Zhong), 寶 (Bao). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat field, enclosed within a plain raised rim. The inscription reads 咸豐重寶, denoting 'Heavy Currency of the Xianfeng [Emperor]'.
