The Xianfeng reign cash series was minted in response to a fiscal emergency of the first order. The Taiping Rebellion, which had seized Nanjing in 1853, severed the Qing government from critical southern revenue streams, forcing Beijing to authorize inflated-denomination cash coins as an emergency measure. The 50-cash pieces were among the first high-denomination issues ordered from the Ministry of Revenue Mint — a stop-gap that rapidly spiraled into monetary chaos as the court authorized denominations reaching 1,000 cash.
The "small type" designation distinguishes this from heavier early strikes; output quality and weight dropped noticeably as the crisis deepened through 1855.
