| Obverse description | Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform formation around a central square hole, read in the traditional order: top (咸), right (重), bottom (豐), left (寶). The legends together read 'Xianfeng Zhongbao,' denoting the reign title of the Xianfeng Emperor and signifying 'heavy currency.' The characters are boldly cast in high relief against a flat, unadorned field, with a broad raised rim encircling the design. The overall execution is characteristic of the large-denomination cast cash produced under the Qing dynasty during the Xianfeng era. |
