The field is largely flat and unadorned, though faint radiate lines extending from the corners of the square hole toward the outer rim are characteristic of this variety as catalogued by Hartill. The surfaces exhibit heavy green patination and encrustation typical of excavated Xin Dynasty bronze cash coinage. |

Wang Mang's currency reforms were among the most ambitious — and catastrophically unpopular — monetary interventions in Chinese history. His first reform, announced in 7 AD shortly after seizing the regency, abolished the Han wu zhu coinage and introduced a new denomination hierarchy that the population largely refused to accept. Merchants and commoners continued using the familiar wu zhu in defiance of imperial edict, a resistance so widespread that Wang Mang eventually had to criminalize the possession of old coinage.
The radiate reverse lines on this type are specific to Hartill 9.6 and distinguish it from the plainer issues of the same reform series.
