The Qianyuan Zhongbao was introduced in 759 AD as the Tang court scrambled to finance military operations against An Lushan's rebellion — one of the most destructive civil wars in Chinese history, ultimately killing tens of millions. The 50-cash nominal value was a fiscal fiction; no one accepted these at face value, and the resulting inflation accelerated the dynasty's broader economic collapse.
The inner circle variety (Hartill 15.107) is among the more elusive sub-types within the Qianyuan series, distinguished from the plain-reverse issues struck concurrently at multiple provincial furnaces operating under increasingly loose imperial oversight.
