The Banco Internacional de Costa Rica was a state-controlled institution that absorbed the functions of several earlier private banks following the 1936 banking reorganization — making this 1935 note a product of the transition period, issued just before the bank itself was restructured into what would become the Banco Nacional de Costa Rica.
American Bank Note Company handled the bulk of Central American government printing through this period, and the Costa Rican relationship with ABNC was longstanding. At the céntimos denominations, these notes saw hard daily use and survivorship is correspondingly poor.
